June 24, 2003
Today Sony Ericsson announced that we will restructure our operations in order to increase the focus of our phone business in GSM, EDGE, and UMTS. The US CDMA phones business is being phased out and global R&D operations, within GSM, EDGE, and UMTS, will be reduced to fewer sites.
This decision is part of Sony Ericsson’s effort to strengthen the focus on strong businesses and profitability through a restructuring of R&D activities involving the CDMA handset development in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, USA, and other handset development activities in Munich, Germany. In total, about 500 employees will be affected, none of whom are from the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) unit. Sony Ericsson remains committed to continued development of CDMA phones in Japan and CDMA modules for the Americas.
Sony Ericsson’s M2M business has a leading position within the North American market for CDMA modules with the current, harsh environment capable, CM42 CDMA 1XRTT module used by several Automotive and Fleet Management Customers. Sony Ericsson M2M is fully committed to continue developing competitive products with the objective of capturing new business and sustaining its growth in Automotive Telematics and Fleet Management segments in the coming years. An augmented and enhanced CDMA module portfolio is a key component of this strategy and business direction. We look forward to sharing our product road maps with you in the near future.
With these refocusing efforts, we are confident that Sony Ericsson will be better suited than ever before to address our customers’ needs and as a result, we look forward to continued strengthening in our business relationships going forward with our customers in M2M. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions or concerns with regard to our commitment to CDMA technology in the M2M segment.
